Understanding Hypnotherapy Credentials

Not all hypnotherapy credentials are equal. Here's what each tier means so you can find the right practitioner for your needs.

Tier 1

Licensed Hypnotherapist

Licensed healthcare professionals (psychologists, therapists, doctors) who have added hypnosis training to their existing practice. Their primary credential is in medicine or mental health -- hypnosis is an additional tool, typically representing a small portion of their overall practice.

Training
20-60 hours of hypnosis training
Full healthcare license + hypnosis certification
Best For
  • Clients needing medical oversight
  • Insurance-covered sessions
  • Complex mental health concerns
  • Integrated treatment plans
Common credentials: PhD, PsyD, LCSW, LMFT, LPC, MD
Tier 2

Clinical Hypnotherapist

Dedicated hypnotherapy practitioners with 700+ hours of specialized training exclusively in clinical hypnosis. Hypnotherapy isn't something they added to another practice -- it IS their practice. This depth of focus often translates to advanced technique mastery and protocol expertise.

Training
700-1500+ hours
Hypnotherapy-specific education
Best For
  • Deep expertise in hypnotherapy techniques
  • Advanced protocol work
  • Complex habit and behavioral change
  • Clients wanting a hypnotherapy specialist
Common credentials: CCHt, RCH, ARCH, ASCH
Tier 3

Certified Hypnotherapist

Trained practitioners with 300+ hours of foundational hypnotherapy education. Qualified to help with common concerns like stress, habits, and performance.

Training
300-500 hours
Foundational hypnotherapy education
Best For
  • Smoking cessation
  • Weight management
  • Stress reduction
  • Performance improvement
Common credentials: CHt, NGH, ACHE, IACT
Tier 4

Hypnotist

Entry-level practitioners with basic certification (100 hours or less). May focus on motivation, relaxation, or stage performance.

Training
40-100 hours
Basic certification
Best For
  • Basic relaxation
  • Motivation and goal-setting
  • General wellness
  • Introductory hypnosis experience
Common credentials: NGH, ABH

A note on standards

There is no single, universally recognized standard for hypnotherapy credentials. Unlike fields such as medicine or law, hypnotherapy is largely self-regulated, and different organizations have different requirements.

The tier system above represents our assessment based on training hours, certification rigor, and scope of practice. It is meant to help consumers make informed decisions, not to serve as an official regulatory framework. We encourage you to research any practitioner's specific credentials and ask about their training directly.
